The Museum of Science & History, known locally as MOSH, is not an open Southbank attraction on this Stay Safe Jax page. Google marks MOSH at 1025 Museum Circle as closed permanently. That is the correct historic campus, not a different museum. Stay Safe Jax does not keep the old 4.0 from 1,337 Google reviews as a live headline, and it does not borrow a rating from another science center, planetarium, or children’s museum.
The Jacksonville Daily Record reported on May 2, 2025, that MOSH would close September 1 so staff could focus on a new museum. The same story said MOSH had been at Museum Circle since 1968, after a 1941 founding, on city-owned land near Friendship Park. News4JAX’s August 31, 2025, report said the Southbank doors were shutting while a larger Northbank building was planned, with community pop-ups in the meantime. Jacksonville Today’s May 2, 2025, piece placed the future site on about 2.5 acres of the Shipyards along East Bay Street after the Downtown Investment Authority backed a long city lease.
By June 9, 2026, the Daily Record reported demolition underway at 1025 Museum Circle. DIA had approved money to take the 1969 building down after staff decided it was not salvageable. The Times-Union published July 2026 demolition photos of crews working the Southbank shell beside new residential construction. That is a sourced closure and teardown, not a rumor.
The Genesis project is a move, not a quiet rename of the old building. On September 1, 2026, the Daily Record said MOSH had reached 60 percent design on a five-story, about 125,000-square-foot Northbank facility in the Shipyards, with groundbreaking aimed at 2027 if city boards approve. The city would own the building and lease it to MOSH for 40 years at $1 a year, with park and riverwalk work already in the capital plan. Earlier 2025 stories had talked about a 2026 groundbreaking and a 2028 opening; the September 2026 update pushed groundbreaking later. Stay Safe Jax is not inventing a new address or hours for a building that is not open.
Until a Northbank museum actually opens, this listing stays active as a closed Southbank education page: rating 0, no borrowed Google card, no warning flag. Residents looking for a science museum today should not drive to Museum Circle expecting exhibits. Cummer, MOCA, and the zoo are separate listings.
Is MOSH still open on Jacksonville’s Southbank?
No. The Daily Record and News4JAX reported the Museum Circle building closed September 1, 2025. Google lists 1025 Museum Cir as closed permanently.
Why did MOSH close?
Museum leaders said they were shifting work to a new Northbank museum (often called the Genesis project). The Daily Record and Jacksonville Today covered the 2025 closure announcement and the Shipyards site.
What is happening to 1025 Museum Circle?
The Daily Record reported demolition underway in June 2026 after DIA funded takedown of the 1969 building. The Times-Union published July 2026 demolition photos.
When will the new MOSH open?
Not yet. The Daily Record’s September 1, 2026, update said design was about 60 percent complete and groundbreaking was targeted for 2027, pending city approvals. Earlier stories had hoped for 2026 construction and a 2028 opening.
Does Stay Safe Jax show MOSH’s old Google score?
No. The closed Southbank Places card had 4.0 from 1,337 reviews, but this page’s headline is 0. Stay Safe Jax did not attach another museum.
Is this the same place as MOCA or the Cummer?
No. MOCA is downtown on Laura Street. The Cummer is in Riverside. MOSH’s closed building was on Southbank Museum Circle.
